The VP-186 Lien Release is an official Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles form that lienholders use to release their security interest in a vehicle. When you finance a vehicle purchase through a bank, credit union, or other lender, that institution places a lien on the vehicle title, giving them a legal claim to the vehicle until the loan is fully paid. The VP-186 is how lienholders formally release that claim.
Once you pay off your vehicle loan, the lienholder must complete and submit a VP-186 Lien Release to the Nevada DMV. This allows the DMV to issue you a clear title (also called a "pink slip") showing you as the sole owner with no outstanding liens. Without a properly completed and notarized VP-186, the lien remains on your title indefinitely, even though the loan has been satisfied.
The form requires detailed information about the lienholder, the vehicle (VIN, year, make, model), and the borrower. The VP-186 must be signed by an authorized representative of the lienholder and must be notarized to be legally valid. The Nevada DMV will not accept this form or clear the lien without proper notarization from a licensed Nevada notary public.

Download the official form from the Nevada DMV website. The lienholder (bank, credit union, finance company, or private lender) must fill in all required sections: complete lienholder information including name, address, and contact details; detailed vehicle information (VIN, year, make, model, license plate); borrower information; and the date the lien is being released. Do not sign the form yet. Complete everything except the signature and notary sections.
The person signing on behalf of the lienholder must prepare valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID). Have loan payoff documentation, the vehicle title or title number, and proof that the loan has been satisfied. If signing for a financial institution, bring authorization documents proving you have authority to release liens on behalf of the organization.

Our notary arrives at your specified location with all necessary equipment. We verify the signer's identity using their valid photo ID and review the completed VP-186 form to ensure all sections are properly filled out. For institutional signers, we verify that the person has proper authorization to release liens on behalf of the lienholder.
The authorized lienholder representative signs the VP-186 form in the notary's physical presence. Our notary witnesses the signature and confirms that the signer is signing voluntarily and has the authority to release the lien. This witnessing is a critical legal requirementโpre-signed forms cannot be notarized and will be rejected by the Nevada DMV.
After witnessing the signature, our notary completes the notarial certificate on the VP-186 form. This includes recording the date, location, type of identification presented, and the notarial act performed. The notary then applies their official Nevada notarial seal and signature, making the document legally valid and acceptable to the Nevada DMV for lien release processing.
The lienholder typically sends the notarized VP-186 directly to the vehicle owner, who then submits it to the Nevada DMV along with the vehicle title. The DMV processes the lien release and issues a clear title showing no outstanding liens. Processing typically takes 2-4 weeks. The entire notarization process takes 15-20 minutes, and we can notarize multiple VP-186 forms in one appointment for financial institutions processing multiple loan payoffs.
Authorized Lienholder Representative: The VP-186 must be signed by someone with legal authority to act on behalf of the lienholder organization. For banks and credit unions, this is typically a loan officer, branch manager, or authorized employee. For private lenders, this is the individual or entity listed as the lienholder on the title.
Required Identification:
For Financial Institutions: Banks, credit unions, and finance companies must ensure the signer has proper authorization to release liens. This typically requires:
For Private Lenders: If you're a private individual who financed a vehicle sale, you must personally appear before the notary with your valid photo ID. Bring the original loan agreement or promissory note showing you as the lienholder.
The Borrower Does NOT Sign: The vehicle owner (borrower) does not sign the VP-186 Lien Release. This form is completed and signed solely by the lienholder releasing their interest in the vehicle. The borrower simply submits the notarized form to the DMV with their title.
Cannot Sign: The Nevada DMV will not accept VP-186 forms signed by unauthorized parties, individuals without proper identification, or forms that were pre-signed before meeting with a notary. All signatures must be made in the notary's presence after identity and authorization verification.
